Assam Travel Guide

Assam is the land where you find flowers that are exquisitely beautiful, animals that are rare, and a beleagured people that are proud and inviting. In ancient times Assam constituted a part of the land known successively as Pragjyotisha or Pragjyotishpura, and Kamarupa. Asom (Axom) or its anglisized version Assam is a comparatively modern name. Opinions on the root of the name vary with one view ascribing its origin to the Bodo word Ha-Cham which means "low or level country" and a second view ascribing it to the word Asama, meaning "unequalled" or "peerless", and used to denote the Ahoms, a Shan tribe which ruled the land for six centuries from the 13th Century A.D.ASSAM, the heart of north-east India, has vast expanses of forest, hills, undulating plains and rivers. The people are simple by nature. Exclusive tribal cultures co-exist. Brahmaputra, one of the four largest rivers in the world, flows through the state. Assam has drawn people from diverse cultures and races in different points of time. The main tourist attraction is the Kaziranga National Park, home of India's rare one-horned rhinoceros.

The city of Guwahati is another place in the state which has in its vicinity numerous ancient Hindu temples and is reputed as an ideal place to explore the whole northeastern region. The capital Dispur is very near Guwahati. Other tourist destinations in the state are Hajo, Digboi, Manas, Jorhat, Tezpur, Sibsagar, Dibrugarh etc. ssam has mild winters and warm summers. Summer is March to June and monsoon from July to August. November to February is winter. Average temperature is moderate, about 29 degress C in the hottest month of August. The average valley temperature in January is 16 degrees C. The real force of the monsoon winds is felt from June onward. Rainfall in Assam ranks among the highest in the world; annual rainfall varies from 70 inches in the west to 120 inches in the east. Best season: February to May. THE MOST colourful, national spring festival of Assam is Rongali Bihu. Celebrated from April 13 to 16 every year, it is linked to the start of the next agricultural season. Bihu, a unique dance form, is performed in accompaniment of songs of love and passion.

Access: The functional airports are at Guwahati, Jorhat, Silchar, Dibrugarh, and Tezpur. There are regular air services for New Delhi and Calcutta from Guwahati. Dibrugarh, Jorhat, and Tezpur are also connected to Calcutta by regular flights. Guwahati is the largest railway station in Assam. It is connected by rail to Delhi, Calcutta, Lucknow, Thiruvananthapuram, Mumbai, and other parts of the country. There is also a good railway network that connects every part of the state. A good road network connects all the important places of the state with the state capital. Guwahati is 2160 km from Delhi, 3104 km from Mumbai, 2688 km from Chennai, and 595 km from Darjeeling.
