Chhattisgarh Travel Guide

Chhattisgarh represents India’s centre of gravity being located at the heart of the country. This new-born state is as old as yesterday and as new as tomorrow. Within just two years of its statehood, Chhattisgarh has emerged as a complete destination with the right mix of infrastructure and opportunities. The state is generously endowed with a rich cultural heritage and attractive natural diversity.Ancient name of Chhattisgarh is Southern Kosal. It is situated in the heart place of India's & Madhyapradesh's south eastern portion. Its includs sixteen districts. Bilaspur, Raigarh, Sarguja, Raipur, Durg, Korea, Korba, Dantewada, Mahasamunda,Kavardha,Champa,Janjgir, Jashpurnagar,Kanker, Dhamtari, Rajnandgaon & Bastar. It is surrounded by mountain's series of Mekal, Sihava & Ramgiri. Its holyland is irregated by Mahanadi, Shivnath, Indravati, Hasdo & Kharun river. The state of Chhattisgarh has an area Sq.KM, out of which 59744 Sq.KM. is forest area. Present population of the state is about 1,95,35,282. Raipur is the capital of the state. The commonly spoken languages are Hindi and Chhattisgarhi. English is also known to the people of Chhattisgarh.

The state has 16 Districts, 90 Vidhan Sabha constituencies and 11 Lok Sabha constituencies. The original inhabitants of this area are tribal (Adivasi). About 80% of the population is dependent on agriculture and natural products. An annual fair is held every year in the month of Magh (January - February). Birth Anniversary of Mahapprabhu Vallabhacharya is celebrated every year on Eleventh bright day of Baisakh (April-May) and a large number of followers of the Sect assemble here to pay homage. Saint Guru Ghasidas of Satnami samaj, Mahaprabhu Vallabhacharya of vaishnav samaj and the great poet and saint Kabirdas also hails from this state. The celebrated chinese traveler Huein Tsang visited the state in the middle of 7th century A.D. Nearly half (44%) of the state is forested and offers a unique panorama of flora and fauna. The national parks of Kanger Valley and Indravati, the Sanctuaries of Udanti, Sitanadi, Barnawapara, Achanakmar, Gomardah, Tamorpingla etc.

Places of interest: Rajim, Champaranya, Sirpur, Ratanpur, Amarkantak, Dongargarh, Arang, Mainpat, Sheorianarayan, Malhar, Tala, Bhoramdeo, Bheemkhoj (Khallari), the water falls at Chotrakoot, Teerathgarh, Mandra, Chitradhara, Tamda, Dhoomar; caves at Kotamsar, Kailash, Aranyak, Sakal Narayan, Tular, Rani, Makar, Kanak & Dongare, Dantewada, Keshkal Valley and Charama Valley.

Access: Raipur is the capital of the state and only centre to be linked up with an air network. Indian Airline connects the city with Delhi and Nagpur by regular flights.

Almost all the state is connected with good railway network internally as well as externally. Raipur and Bilaspur is the major railway stations connected to every part of the country. National Highways 6, 43, and 16 connect all the major cities of the state to other parts in the country like Bhubaneswar, Calcutta, and many places in the western India. There is a good internal road network in the state connecting all the major parts with the state capital.
