Dadra and Nagar Haveli Travel Guide

The Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli is a small piece of land cornered between the big states of Maharashtra and Gujarat. Until 1954, this area was under the Portuguese colonial rule. On its integration with the Indian Union in 1961, Silvassa was made its capital. Since then, it has been administered by the Government of India as a Union Territory. Measuring about 491 sq. kms, the place is abound in natural beauty and there are a host of things that look forward to doing inthe quietitude. Trekking in the rich forests, paddling in the waters in the company of swans, riding water scooters, aqua bikes, speed boats in the large expanse of Damanganga Reservoir or simply observing nature in its realm- this are some of the most interesting things to be done. The capital is Silvassa. Four-fifths of the population belong to the Adivasi ethnic group, which includes the Varli, Dhodia, and Kondkan peoples. The predominant religion is Hinduism, with Christian and Muslim minorities. Until 1954 the territory was part of Portuguese Daman. Most of the population depends on agriculture, producing rice, wheat, and millet, although there are some industrial estates manufacturing plastics, chemicals, and fertilizers largely with the aid of migrant workers. 40% of the total area is forest, and felling of the valuable teak timber is regulated. The territory enjoys a very pleasant climate from November to March, which is actually the best time for a visit. The summer temperature does not go very high, due to its proximity to the sea, and the nights are really pleasant

Dadra and Nagar Haveli came under Portuguese control between 1783 and 1785, and in 1954 indigenous freedom movements forced the Portuguese to abandon it to India. It became a union territory in 1961. The population is predominantly Hindu

Silvassa, its capital is about 14 kms, from Bhilad and Vapi. The nearest railway station is Vapi via Western Railways, which is about 18 kms from Silvassa. Bombay is the nearest airport. Silva, in Portuguese means Woods. And this can be seen when you visit Silvassa, the tiny, sleepy capital township. Tall trees reaching for the heavens line the roads. Off the beaten track, little cottages back in the warm sun or lie in the shadows of the trees.
