Delhi Travel Destinations
Delhi is the capital of India and the third-largest city after Mumbai and Calcutta. Delhi has not always been the capital of India but it has played an important role in Indian history. Delhi is a relatively easy city to find your way around in, although it is very spread out. Delhi is one of the most historic capitals in the world and two of its monuments- the Qutb Minar and Humayun's Tomb - have been declared World Heritage Sites. It offers a multitude of interesting places and attractions to the visitor, so much so that it becomes difficult to decide from where to begin exploring the city. In Old Delhi, attractions like mosques, forts, and other monuments that depict India's Muslim history. The important place in Old Delhi includes the majestic Red Fort, the historical Chandni Chowk, besides Raj Ghat and Shanti Vana, the last two being modern structures constructed after India's Independence in 1947. New Delhi, on the other hand, is a modern city designed by Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker. Delhi is a spacious, open city that houses many government buildings and embassies, apart from places of historical interest.
There is almost nothing that is not available in Delhi and within the very recent past outlets of big international names in footwear and clothes have sprung up all over the city. And for one wanting to shop only for Indian goods the variety is almost mind-boggling. In fact as far as shopping is concerned, Delhi could well be termed the world within a city. It’s difficult to actually recommend places to shop as sampling the broadest shopping choices is often offset by having to endure the most overbearing salesmen. There are four or five cottage industry emporiums that every driver will take you to, most of them in Janpath. The range and choices are good but you must spend 15 minutes in a shop before your driver gets his commission – this can lead to real problems with getting around at your leisure.Tourist centre Connaught Place is the best place to browse, relatively stress free, for typical holiday buys. Sports outlets, shoe stores, banks and souvenirs shops are all represented and fan outwards from the central circle. This is also the place to pick up a second hand book or a cheap hair cut. Delhi residents consider Old Delhi as the place to go shopping. The area is rather disordered and stuffed with markets, textile shops and cheap restaurants. The city has an extreme climate. December and January are chilly with night times lows of 4 °C. The city has spring months in February and March. The summer months of May & June are scorchingly hot with mercury soaring to a high of 46 °C. The city does not have much of rainy season. The monsoon lasts from July to September.
