Maharashtra is one of the most industrialized states of India, which occupies the western and central parts of the country and extends over the Sahyadri mountains; a vast stretch of 720 kilometers of the Arabian sea coast providing it a beautiful backdrop. It is located in the northern center of peninsular India, Maharashtra is surrounded by the Arabian sea in the west, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh on the north, Madhya Pradesh in the east and Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh on the south. The state extends between the latitudes 15.6° North and 22.1° North and longitudes 72.6° East and 80.9° East. The Western Ghats run parallel with the coast; the rest of the state stands on the high Deccan plateau, stretching some 800 km east.
Maharashtra with Mumbai as capital was formed in 1960 when the Maratha and Gujrati-speaking areas were again separated. It has strong links with Gandhi and India`s Independence.
Mumbai's streets, corners and pavements are lined with shops and virtually anything you want is available in parts of its famous bazaars and markets. The main areas for bargain clothes are around Colaba Causeway and Fashion Street, which stretches along the Cross and Azad Maidans. More trendy and costly shopping is found at Breach Candy and Kemps Corner, down the hill from the Hanging Gardens. Festivals are a result of intermingling of different religions and communities. In Maharashtra festival of Lord Ganesh (Ganesh Chaturthi), is the most popular & exciting festival in Pune. Huges processions towards the Mula Mutha River chanting 'Ganpati bappa morya'. Shopping is a pleasure especially for those who have knack for bargaining. The caves of Aurangabad, Ajanta and Ellora contain some beautiful rock-hewn sculptures, columns and frescoes hard to find anywhere else. These belong to the age when Buddhism flourished and dominated the land. Maharashtra also possesses numerous holy places of various religious communities. Mumbai is the nerve-centre of Maharashtra. It is the gateway port, the business and commercial centre, and a major metropolis in the western region of India. The present city of Pune was the childhood home of Shivaji, and about 11 km from the city is Khadakvasla, the home of the National Defence Academy. Fine cotton-growing plains of black soil provide cotton for the textile mills of Mumbai, Baroda, and Ahmedabad.

Access: Maharashtra has five domestic airports and one international airport at Mumbai. Most of these airports have regular connections through the Indian Airlines and other domestic airlines. Mumbai is the most connected international airport in India and most of the important international destinations are connected with this place. Mumbai is the hub of the railway network in Maharashtra having three major railway stations and the headquarters of two Railway Zones in India. Most of the important places in India are connected by rail to Mumbai. Many important tourist spots in the state are directly connected to Mumbai by regular trains. Maharashtra has the best road connection in India and all the places of importance are conveniently connected to each other. The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation as well as private operators provides good services connecting all the tourist centers in the state.
