The state of Punjab is located in Northern India, with Himachal Pradesh and Haryana as neighbours. Punjab means “the land of five rivers”, but all the five rivers do not belong to Punjab now, after partition. The fertile land of Punjab nestles exciting culture, myriad images of swaying emerald green fields and hearty people who are excellent folk dancers and musicians.Punjab is known as grainhouse of India. The Punjab is inhabited by Sikhs. The Sikhism is one of the most open and disciplined religions of the world. The people of Punjab are very hard working and are known for their enterprenuership. The major city in Punjab is Amritsar, the holy town of the Sikhs. The famous Golden Temple stands at the centre of this city, which is visited by people from all over the world. Other places of tourist interest in Punjab are the Durgiana Mandir and Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar, Takhat Kesgarh Sahib in Anandpur Sahib, the Bhakra Dam complex and the Sodal temple at Jalandhar. Punjab being a predominantly agricultural state that prides itself on its food grain production, it is little wonder that its most significant festival is Baisakhi, which marks the arrival of the harvesting season. For the Sikhs, Baisakhi has a special significance because on this day in 1699, their tenth guru, Guru Gobind Singh organized the Order of the Khalsa. Punjab, the chief wheat producing area of the country, is the overland entry point into India. The state is also known for its production of sports and hosiery goods. The holiest shrine for the Sikhs is the Golden Temple in Amritsar, so called because the dome is covered with gold leaf. The state has three major seasons summer, monsoon, and winter. Summer remains in the state from April to June and the heat is unbearable at that time. Monsoon touches this state in the month of July and remain in action till September. Most of the rainfall in the state occurs during this season only. The annual average rainfall is 770 mm. winter comes in October and remains till March and extreme cold can be experienced at this time.
