Animals : Kumily
The Fauna Is Much The Same As That In Mudumalai National Park. The Only Animal Missing Is The Chital Deer, One Of The Main Animals In Many Indian Parks. Even The Samar Deer Is Seldom Seen, And As Far As Other Deer Are Concernedythe Park Is Poorly Stocked.
On The Other Hand, The Lion-Tailed Monkey Isn’t Found In Mudumalai. Only About 800 Of These Animals Still Exist, And About One Hundred Of These Live In Periyar. Nilgiri Langur, The Black Version Of The Common Langur, Is Also Found Here.
It’s Fun To Watch The Indian Giant Squirrel In Periyar Park As It Does Gymnastics In The Trees. The Niain Attraction, As I Said Before, Is The Elephants. Periyar Was Once Famous For Its Tuskers (Men Who Carried Tusks). Unfortunately, Most Of Them Have Been Killed By Wild Elephants.
Also Found In The Park Are 49 Species Of Fish, 4 Turtles, 16 Snakes, 4 Mongooses And 264 Species Of Bird. You Shouldn’t Take Too Much Notice Of The Statistics. Like Other Parks In The Indian Subcontinent, Periyar National Park Is Not An Open Air Zoo And You Need A Lot Of Time, Luck And Patienceif You Want To See The Animals.
Park Problems
As With Many Of The Other Parks In India, Periyar Has Problems With Encroaching Urbanisation, Grazing Cattle Near Kumily, Outbreak Of A Disease , Poachers And Bushfires.
