Staying Overnight In The Park: Kumily

The Luxurious Lake Palace Hotel Charges 500Rs For A Single;And 72ors For A Double Full Pension. The Hotel Is Only A Few Minutes By Boat From The Information Centre. Transportation Is Arranged At The Hotel Aranya Niva, And Is Not Available After 6pm. Next To The Luxury Hotel Are Four Cheaper And Simple Rest Houses Which All Have A Macham Nearby, And Can Only Be Reached By Boat.

The Regular Sightseeing Boat Will Take You To Both The Edappalayam Rest House Near Hotel Lake Palace, And The Manakkavala Rest House (They Will Let You Off There). The Charter Trip To The Remoter Thannikudy And Mullakudi Rest Houses Costs 180Rs Each Way. All Four Rest Houses Have Two Rooms For Rent Each, And Charge Only Lors Per Person. Extra People Sleeping On The Floor Pay 5Rs. The Maximum Stay Is Three Days. Each Rest House Has A Hut Warden Who Cooks For His Guests. You Have To Provide ^E Food Though, And This Has To Be Brought In With You. No Need To Say That Places In These Rest Houses Are Highly Sought After, And They Are Usually Booked Out. Scientists Have Priority, But You Can Always Try Reservations Can Be Made At The Information Centre. You Should Also Take Some Mosquito Coils And A Torch As Well As Your Food.

The Wildlife PreserŽvation Officer In Kumily Is Responsible For The Mangala Devi Temple-KERALA 321 In The Three Large Hotels In The Park, There Is No Restriction On Your Length Of Stay, But You Are Only Supposed To Stay A Maximum Of Three (Jays In The Two-Room Rest Houses, Although It Depends On The Demand.

The Fauna Is Much The Same As That In Mudumalai National Park. The Only Animal Missing Is The Chital Deer, One Of The Main Animals In Many Indian Parks. Even The Samar Deer Is Seldom Seen, And As Far As Other Deer Are Concernedythe Park Is Poorly Stocked. On The Other Hand, The Lion-Tailed Monkey Isn't Found In Mudumalai. Only About 800 Of These Animals Still Exist, And About One Hundred Of These Live In Periyar. Nilgiri Langur, The Black Version Of The Common Langur, Is Also Found Here. It's Fun To Watch The Indian Giant Squirrel In Periyar Park As It

Elephant And Jeep Rides : Kumily

The Park Has Only One Young Riding Elephant, And It Costs 2ors For Two People'for An Hour's, Ride, Which Is Hardly More Than A Harmless Walk And Isn't Fealty Worth It. The Park Jeeps Are Not Made Available To Take Tourists Anywhere.

Fees Park Entry Is And Movie Cameras . No Charge For Ordinary Cameras. Eating The Selection Of Groceries And Cheap Food

Between Periyar House And The Jetty, Some Of The Trees Have Their Botanical Names Displayed On Plaques. You Can See, For Example, A Teak Tree And The Mighty Ficus Religiosa. Entry To The Park Is Prohibited Between 6pm And 6am Under The Threat Of Prosecution. Of Course, The Area Around The Park Hotels And The Road To Kumily Are Excepted.
