On an island south-east of the cape is the main attraction of kan-nyakumari: the vivekananda rock memorial. It was built in 1970 in honour of swami vivekananda. Boats go to the island between 7-1 lam and 2-5pm (cost 3rs), but not in bad weather. Photography is prohibited on the island as well as on the journey across.
Gandhi memorial: the ashes of mahatma gandhi were stored here before they were scattered on the ocean. The memorial was built so that on the 2nd october (his birthday) the rays of the sun fall on the place where his ashes once rested.
Also worth seeing are the kannyakumari temple of the goddess bhagavathi and the roman catholic church which stands in the middle of a small, fishing village. It is also fascinating to watch the fishermen going out in their nutshell-like boats to catch fish.

Between kannyakumari and kovalam is kolachal beach which is supposed to be worth visiting. The. 567 sq km (219 sq miles) tiger sanctuary at mundanthurai is practically undiscovered.
Cape comorin is the land's end of india. There is nothing between there and antarctica but water. There are many lodges and hotels in walking distance of the bus terminal (the railway station is in the suburbs). If you want a room with a view of the cape, then you should go to one of the mostly clean, new, multi-storey hotels which are only a little more expensive than some of the rundown, old lodges, where you will only have a view of someone's backyard. Tarn Taran Sightseeing
Darbar Sahib Sri Guru Arjan Dev, the premier Gudwara, is the main attraction. It was built under the stewardship of Sardar Budh Singh and Sardar Jassa Singh Ramgar-hia after the site was cleared of muslim inŽtruders and encroachments. The gilt domed structure faces the holy tank the construction of which was initiated by Guru Arjan Dev.
A leper asylum, Dukh Nivaran, started by the fifth Guru is nearby. It was taken over by Christian missionaries in the 19th century.
