The city has now introduced a metered taxi, the white coloured maruti van with boldly displayed city taxi in black. The meter, which is fixed inside at left corner of dashboard, shows both the distance traveled, in kilometers, and the fare, in rupees. The flag-down charge is for first 40 km, for every subsequent kilo¬meter and waiting charge per hour.
At present, the taxis are easily available at the airport, railway station, bus station only. Very rarely do you find one cruising on the road. The city administration, however, is trying to find space for proper stands at prominent locations in the city, and it may not be very long before taxis are seen more commonly on city streets.
An attractive option, though, is to hail a taxi (metered) by telephone. This service, which was introduced over a year ago, is quite popular. The fare structure for these radio taxis is similar to city taxi service,
The more commonly used transport, however, is still the metered auto-rick¬shaw, found all over the city. The basic, flag-down, fare is though most auto-rickshaw meters have yet to be adjusted. These flag-down at and the correct fare has to be converted through a chart carried by the driver. Usually, the auto-rickshaw drivers will run according to the meter but some, specially at the railway stations, bus station or outside hotels will only go on negotiated, and obviously at a much higher, fare.
If you require to use a car for long du¬ration, full-day or half-day, or make an excursion out of the city then the better option is a tourist taxi, easily procured through agencies or hotel’s travel desk. The charges vary from for a non-a/c car to for an air-conditioned.
