Allahabad : City with a Past
Amongst the cities of Uttar Pradesh, and indeed of India, Allahabad has a unique situation. It is not just one of the holiest Hindu pilgrimages, or a strategic citadel of medieval times or just a city of fanatic fervour and sacriiice during momentous movements like the fight for independence, or even a city of great personalities, past and present.
It is a city that does not live merely on its past, or, for that matter, on any single dimension. It is, in fact, a historical and religious city that lives in the present, for the future. And it is one of the cleanest cities of Uttar Pradesh, atleast around its vast district of Civil Lines.
A controversial suggestion? Take a stroli along the M.G. Road on any evening, especially on the stretch between the All Saints Cathedral and Ram Chowk, and a little beyond. It is a wide tree-iined avenue meant to linger on and take leisurely walks in.
Stop at any of the side-walk cafes that serve anything from ‘macaroni’ to ‘masaia dosa’ to green chickpea chaat laced with green chillies, shredded carrots and raddish.
Or walk into any of the fine restaurants and dine in airconditioned comfort. Or go on a shopping spree, for, the best stores are located here.
You could also walk around the Civil Lines with its wide avenues, parks and fine bungalows standing in spacious compounds. Or stroll into Khusro Bagh, just across the railway track, and immerse yourself into the seclusion of Mughal period architecture and gardens. You will never regret a moment spent here!
